Rationale:

 

While taking a Social Work with Special Populations class, I had the opportunity to interview a grandmother who was responsible for raising her grandchildren.  This type of situation has become more prevalent in recent years.  I chose the reflective paper I wrote after the interview to demonstrate my experience with people of diverse situations and backgrounds.

Objective 2:

 

 Synthesize and integrate varied sources to inform decisions and create solutions and appropriate problem-solving strategies congruent with the social work knowledge base. (Program Goals #3, #4).

 

Rationale: 

 

In Practice III we were involved in the first Truth Commission in Chattanooga.  As a class we planned, organized and implemented the Truth Commission.  I served on a number of committees including the logistics committee and I also served as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the Truth Commission proceedings.

Objective 3:

 

Demonstrate professional behavior congruent with the social work Code of Ethics and apply strategies to effectively identify, address, and resolve ethical conflicts in professional practice. (Program Goals #2, #3, #4, #5).

 

Rationale:

I chose a paper written about my professional intergration of social work into my personal life.  I believe this writing demonstrates my understanding of the NASW code of Ethics and my commitment to adhering to those ethics.

Objective 4:

 

Apply strategies for continuous self-evaluation including supervision and consultation, and feedback from peers and other sources for self development. (Program Goals #1, #4, #5).

 

Rationale:

 

The assignment chosen for this objective is a reflective paper written after I had constructed a genogram of my family.  This required in-depth reflection of my beliefs and biases and how my course in life had been affected by this and how it would be affected in the future.  This assignment proved to be enlightening for me and I refer back to it from time to time to refresh myself with the content in order to remain objective when in the professional setting.

Objective 5:

 

Practice with an understanding of human rights and social justice by engaging in systematic social change to alleviate economic deprivation and oppression by applying change strategies to begin the process of achieving a just society in a global community. (Program Goals #2, #3).

 

Rationale:

 

The assignment chosen to demonstrate the understanding of this objective is an annotated bibliography project that was done for my Research class.  I reviewed available  research dealing with Children and Poverty: The Psychological Impact.  After completion of this assignment I have continued to read and investigate the effects of sustained poverty on children and the impacts it has over the lifespan.

Objective 6:

 

Integrate an appreciation for the history of the social work profession and the relationship between social welfare policies and the social work profession to inform the context of current generalist practice. (Program Goals #1, # 3).

 

Rationale:

 

In our senior policy class at UTC we investigated local, state and international policies relating to the subject matter of our choice.  I chose Hate Crimes as the subject because I do not feel there is enough attention given to the prevelance of this type of crime being underreported.  I chose the power point I completed for this assignment as a summary of my awareness of policy issues.

Objective 7:

 

Evaluate the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions and other generalists practice activities and client situations in the context of political and social policy by applying both quantitative and qualitative evaluation, research, and effective writing skills to a variety of practice settings. Rationale:

 

My field placement is at Four Points, Inc. which is a supervised visitation facility for families who have been court ordered to have supervised contact with thier chidren because of domestic violence allegations, sexual abuse allegations, neglect allegations and custodial issues. The agency mission statement states that they will "minister to the needs of the four points of the family-mother, father, child and family unit-involved in domestic violence and to thereby stop domestic violence.  My research is designed as a Program Evaluation for the agency.  In preparation of this research, I composed a research brief dealing with the reporting of domestic violence issues.

Objective 8:

 

Function as a professional, collaborative, and supportive team member in implementing agency mission and functions. (Program Goals #1, #2, #3, #4, #5).

 

Rationale:

 

The Executive Director at Four Points, Inc. is the coordinator for the Domestic Violence Task Force Safety Audit and Fatality Review Team.  I assisted the group in creating a tool for law enforcement officers to distribute to victims of domestic violence containing relevant resources.

Objective 9:

 

 Apply an understanding of the effects of interpersonal, social, and institutional oppression and discrimination in assessing and planning change in service delivery systems and organizations. (Program Goals #1, #2, #3, #5).

 

Rationale:

 

My research proposal done in Fall of 2007 outlined the plans for the program evaluation to be conducted at Four Points, Inc. to study the possible effects of supervised visitation on child adjustment and permancy planning.  Non-profits agencies such as this one benefit greatly from this type of evaluation.

Rationale: 

 

 As part of an assignment for Senior Seminar, I participated in a group to develop a public awareness project in conjunction with National Social Work Month.  We chose the theme: Top Ten Reasons You May Need a Social Worker.  As part of the project I developed a handout with the definition of a social worker on one side and the Top Ten Reasons on the other.
